How to Protect your Wind Chime in Winter

Carolyn | Saturday, November 17, 2012 in Chime info, News | Comments (0)

During Hurricane Sandy, a number of customers called regarding what to do to protect their wind chimes. While all the chimes that we sell are made for year-round, outdoor use, certainly common sense should prevail when gale-force winds, whether with rain or snow, are predicted.

It is recommended that you take your chime down in high winds – and the same holds true for severe snow storms. Customers in the Northeast, Upper MidWest and Pacific Northwest often comment that they put their chime in the garage or shed during the winter months, simply to prolong its beauty for the summer months. Good idea!

Here in Virginia, we have a temperate climate, so most wind chimes are absolutely fine to be outside hanging year-round. Mine sure are! And it’s lovely to see the snow create beautiful, artistic patterns on the top crown and tubes – only to quickly melt away, usually within a day.

What do you do with your chimes in winter? We’d love to hear!

In Overalls for Our Customers!

Carolyn | Thursday, May 24, 2012 in News, the company | Comments (0)

One of our favorite quotes here at BuyChimes…

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” ~ Thomas Edison

Oh, how true this is! When Mark & Ellen, the former owners of BuyChimes, first approached us about purchasing the business five years ago, Jeff and I were busy-busy with real life—big jobs, raising kids, 30-year mortgage on the house, and the list goes on… Running an Internet store for U.S. wind chimes looked more like overalls than an opportunity, for sure. How well I remember the first day I worked with Mark & Ellen. I came home saying, “I don’t care if I ever touch a wind chime again in my life—that’s hard work!” I look back now and laugh—what a VERY well-disguised opportunity to own a successful small business!

10yranniversarypixHere’s the best part—BuyChimes is celebrating its 10-year anniversary THIS YEAR! Thank you to the scores of customers who have purchased wind chimes from us over the years. We love hearing from you—how creative you are with your chimes, everything from where to hang them to the wittiest saying to engrave on the wind sail. YOU are truly the reason we put on these overalls every day. :)

Stay tuned for the ways we WILL celebrate this milestone… (Hint — it’s bound to involve a super deal!)

A Patriotic Garden for your U.S. made Wind Chime

Carolyn | Sunday, March 11, 2012 in News, the company | Comments (0)

BuyChimes delights in giving back to our customers whenever we can… whether it’s free Gift Wrap or a special sale. In fact, we are always on the lookout for that something “extra” we can do and give to those who choose to buy from us.

garden seed

This spring, in all orders, we’re including a Patriotic Garden seed packet from American Meadows, in Williston, VT. This packet includes Red Poppy, White Baby’s Breath and Blue Cornflower seeds. All you have to do is supply the soil and water! These three flowers will grow quickly and flower at the same time, so a Patriotic Garden it will surely be.

It’s not a big something – just a little something – but we do hope you enjoy it. As you know, BuyChimes only sells U.S. made wind chimes, which makes these red, white & blue flowers just the thing for customers.

Spankin’ New Site!

Carolyn | Wednesday, March 7, 2012 in News, the company | Comments (0)

Customers to BuyChimes will have undoubtedly discovered our spankin’ new website by now. After many months of planning and tweaking, it came online yesterday, March 7. Same great chimes, brand new look.

For BuyChimes, it’s been a fulfilling experience. We’ve had to fine-tune our mission and goals – and then determine how to relate that through the website. It has made us deeply grateful to both our suppliers and our customers – for partnering with us for TEN YEARS now. (Can you tell just how much that means to us?!

But…. a good website is only good if customers can easily find and purchase products. We believe, and sincerely hope, that the new site meets that key component. But if it doesn’t, we’re counting on customers to let us know! Call us at 877-293-6395 – we really would love to hear your comments.

Engraved Chimes

Carolyn | Wednesday, February 22, 2012 in Chime info, Gift info, News | Comments (0)

BuyChimes has done special engraving for customers for years. But we’ve been patiently ensuring that engraving will be successful. We wanted to “get it right.” And we have. Starting with a special Mother’s Day engraving last spring, we tweaked the process, then began offering engraving on Grace Note chimes in the Fall. Corinthian Bells and Shenandoah Melodies chime engraving came on board this Winter. And judging by the orders, our customers are happy for the option! (Psst – Mother’s Day is right around the corner, you know…)

The best part – we’re partnering with another small, family-owned business to offer this service. Eddie Camper and his wife, Tanya, have been engraving for years, and had seen it all, until BuyChimes walked in the door and showed them a wind sail. How great for us! How great for them! And even better, how great for our customers.

Is there another “extra” that we could offer customers to make gift-giving even better?! We’d love to know it. Respond to this article – or simply call me (877-293-6395).

Still in time for Christmas!

Carolyn | Sunday, December 11, 2011 in Chime info, News | Comments (0)

Want to give that perfect chime for Christmas, but not sure if it will get there in time? Our busy FedEx elves assure us that there’s still plenty of time for a Christmas delivery! If we’re not sure the package will be delivered on or before Saturday, 12/24/2011, we’ll call or email you.

And this week (Dec 12-16), since BuyChimes is on the East Coast (Virginia), we’re bumping all West Coast deliveries to the front of the line – and at no extra cost. No worries, East Coasters and Mid-Westerners, you folks really have lots of time! Standard FedEx (free on most orders) shipping takes just 1-3 days for most deliveries up and down the Atlantic seaboard, and 2-3 days for the Midwest. The West is 4 days; and California, Oregon and Washington are 5 days. (Note: For orders of Grace Note chimes, since they ship directly from Grace Note in California, the reverse is true. (East Coast is 5 days, West Coast is 1 day…)

So go ahead, select that free shipping option and relax! We really do have this covered.

Free Beener for Your Christmas Chime

Carolyn | Saturday, December 3, 2011 in Gift info, News | Comments (0)

BeenerHol_smDid you see… we’re throwing in a FREE holiday carabiner with all orders this weekend! In a bright, festive red, this clip will come in so very handy when you’re hanging that Christmas wind chime. It clips on to the top metal ring (or loop of strings if it’s a Gentle Spirits or Majestic Spirits chime) of the chime and then on to your hook or hanger. With a heavy chime, it makes the hanging so much easier! We love ‘em and use ‘em all the time here at HQ.

The text reads “Season’s Greetings!” How perfect for this weekend!

Chimes and Neighbors

Carolyn | Wednesday, October 26, 2011 in Chime info, News | Comments (0)

In this morning’s newspaper, a reader wondered what to do about a neighbor’s wind chime – it was keeping him up at night! How dreadful – for both neighbors.

Miss Manners responded so graciously – check out her thoughts here. But we’ve got some thoughts for the chime aficionados out there:

First off, buy good chimes! And by “good chimes,” we mean hand-tuned, musical wind chimes. There are many, many metallic-sounding chimes out there. They’re cheap and they are, quite literally, everywhere! Most of these are produced outside the U.S. – and frankly, it shows – both in craftsmanship and sound. So shop around and look for the best wind chime you can afford. All the chimes we sell are made in the U.S. and hand-tuned, which means they sound melodic when the wind blows.

And secondly, if you love chimes, but your neighbor does not, then you may want to simply move your chime. I know from talking to many of you – you visually want that chime in a specific location (I confess, I’m the same!). But if it’s a top-quality chime, it will look good anywhere. And, of course, it will sound good anywhere too!

If you do have a neighbor issue – call us. We’re pretty confident that we can find a chime that works for you, your budget & your neighbor too!
